Minister Tessa Jowell Visits the Eltham Centre
Olympics minister Tessa Jowell MP came to visit the Eltham Centre to see the new state-of-the arts sports facilities located in the heart of Eltham. She was met at the Centre by Clive Efford MP for Eltham and Greenwich and Woolwich GLA member Len Duvall.
The centre has been a huge success, attracting over 100,000 visitors in the first three months it was open with an astonishing 40,00 visitors in the last month alone. People of all ages have been taking advantage of all the facilities the centre has to offer like the gym, swimming pools, library, college and the cafe.
Len was leader of the council when the original consultation over the leisure centre was held. Len said, “People made it clear all those years ago that they wanted this facility in their town centre, it is credit to people like Clive that have remained faithful to the views of local people and made sure it became part of the Town Centre. It is very pleasing to see it finished now and watch the comings and goings of people of all ages and backgrounds in this magnificent building.”
Clive says, “I am grateful to people like Len for the vision they had when this scheme was just an aspiration all those years ago. The final product is well worth all the effort of everyone involved. I am extremely proud of having played a part in bringing this centre into being.”
Tessa Jowell added, “The Eltham centre is an example of a the Council working together with a local MP to deliver top class facilities for local people. The stat- of-the-art pool, gym, library and learning facilities all on the same site has more than quadrupled the number of people of all ages and backgrounds coming through the doors, staying fit and building skills. This shows that when you invest in the best people respond in kind - with positive benefits for the whole community."
