Providing real help that builds a stronger Britain

Jobs created with affordable housing

The Government is ready to take urgent action doing what is necessary to steer Britain out of this recession as quickly as possible.

By investing rather than cutting like in previous recessions we will help reduce the numbers in unemployment, repossessions and business closure.  Unemployment in previous recessions was left to turn into permanent workless ness, and soon viable businesses closed, we have learnt from the past and are ready to help build Britain stronger.

So we are helping invest into the jobs sector to guarantee a sixth form, college or apprenticeship to all school leavers and every young person under 25 who has been unemployed for a year will be given a guaranteed job, work experience or training place.

This £1 billion Future Jobs Fund will provide 100,000 jobs for young people and a further 50,000 jobs in areas of high unemployment.  Adults unemployed for six months will get access to jobs supported by recruitment subsidies, helping setting up businesses, skill trainings and volunteering opportunities.

Along with this a combination of public and private investment into the economy will create a further 1.5 million new skilled jobs in the coming years, moving us back towards full employment in the next Parliament under Labour Government.

House prices are already beginning to show promising signs.  And we are resolute to help those in difficulties with their mortgage payments helping people to stay in their homes by investing into the housing market allowing a quicker recovery.

We have committed into investing £1.2 billion for new housing.  John Denham the Communities Secretary praised the move by the government to provide better, fairer and more affordable housing “We are overhauling the way council housing and other social homes are allocated making the system fairer and better suited to the needs of the local people.”

Further moves have also been taken which will see a further £1.5 billion over the next two years delivering 20,000 new affordable, energy efficient homes to rent or buy, as well as creating an estimated 45,000 additional jobs. £500 million of that new money will help housing construction in local communities, and the introduction of a stamp duty holiday on property sold for £175,000 or less will be introduced.

The recession has been hard-hitting for many, and the Labour Government is ensuring that together we get the help we need to invest and build a bigger, better and brighter future for Britain.
